The Sacrament of Baptism

Ancient picture of the Baptismal Rite

General Information

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM - Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1213)

The Church recommends that infants be baptized soon after they are born.

Baptism, like the other Sacraments, is intended to be a community celebration. Baptisms in English are held the third Sunday of the month at our 9:00 a.m. Mass. Private Baptisms are only done as an exception and for a just cause.

Baptism Requirements

Baby/child - Birth Certificate

  • Children 5 years and older are required to attend catechism classes for one year.

Parents and Godparents - Parents and godparents should be registered and participating in a parish. A "registered and participating" member of Holy Family has filed a registration form in our office, is using their issued set of offering envelopes, and is attending Mass every Sunday.

  • If registered at another parish, you will need to submit a letter from your pastor giving you permission to baptize/act as sponsor at Holy Family Church.
  • Parents or godparents not registered and attending Mass at any parish, will need to attend Sunday Masses here for at least 6 weeks BEFORE the Baptism.
  • Parents and godparents need to attend Baptism preparation classes either here or at your respective parishes. If you are from another parish, you will need a letter of permission from your pastor to take classes here or you may complete the Baptism instruction at your parish and submit proof of completion for the classes.

Godparents: Must be at least sixteen years of age. They are required to be Confirmed, practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. We require:

  • A copy of each godparent’s Confirmation certificate
  • Proof of registration and active participation in a parish.
  • Godparents who are married must be married through the Catholic Church. A copy of the Marriage License is required.
  • Godparents who are single cannot be "living with" someone as husband and wife. They must attest to the pastor or deacon they are not "living with someone."

The Stipend fee is $30.00. It is due in the office 1 week before the Baptism. Fees are not collected at the class or at the baptism.

Your Baptism classes and Baptism date will be scheduled when proof of attendance has been established and the required documents have been submitted.

Punctuality is important! Please arrive at your scheduled class and baptism at least 15 minutes early to check in. Late arrivals may cause your class and/or baptism to be postponed.
